SNEAKER DRIVE @ VICKERY MEADOW!
Space activation design based around SHOES! The team at blckspces, in partnership with The Better Block Foundation, created a shoe drive for kids ages 5-17 and free groceries for the community surrounding Vickery Meadow Plaza. Families were also provided with free groceries, giveaways, and safe interaction with some of the built-in features of the plaza.
This project was centered around walkability and access, as the primary mode of transportation in this community is by bus and by foot. Being able to directly (and safely) engage with the community allowed open, clear, and genuine connection to the community and their needs firsthand.
Vickery Meadow/TBK Bank Plaza is a unique space in that it's off the corner of a busy intersection along Park Lane. It's located in one of the highest neighborhoods for crime and poverty in the city of Dallas. The initial space design by The Better Block Foundation was created to help brighten up the corner and discourage crime and have a safe space for kids to hang out at.
The shoe drive gave an in-depth look at how programming activities can be beneficial but aren't always necessary to create space activation. The community around Vickery Meadow naturally created the culture of the space. Placemaking is a great tool for redesigning and reimagining spaces but when it comes to Black + brown communities the genuine intention of the space matters most.
